Adam Frew

Ceramicist Adam Frew is a graduate of the University of Ulster and has worked with internationally renowned potters including Judy Makela in Finland and Lisa Hammond in Greenwich.

In 2008 Adam completed a two year placement at Flowerfield Arts Centre on Craft NI's making it programme for craft business development.  After the programme he remained at the centre where he continues to develop his trademark one-off pots and functional works in porcelain.

He particularly favours throwing. The white porcelain is a perfect ground for the inky cobalt drawings which decorate his pots.

Some imagery is restrained to the simplicity of a single line and other images depict busy narratives. Simple sprigs reminiscent of wax seals from a bygone era embellish some of the surfaces.

“I make functional pots and expressive vessels using a porcelain and stoneware clay, fired in a wood or gas kiln. My approach is to think of the potters wheel as a creative tool and the clay surface as a three-dimensional canvas. I interact strongly with the clay, making marks on the surfaces while they are still wet, deliberately misshaping the vessels.

All of the decoration is spontaneous, a unique fusion of skill and chance – freedom of expression, within necessary boundaries.”
