Lesley Frew

Lesley Frew is a designer/maker based in Belfast, she creates contemporary, ethical jewellery using discarded plastic bags. Lesley graduated from the University of Ulster with a BA (hons) in Fine and Applied Art in 2007.

"My choice of materials is deliberate, I choose resources that are destructive to our environment and would otherwise be heading for landfill. I give these materials a second life, by transforming and reusing them. I enjoy confronting people's expectations by taking a discarded material, giving it a new value and showing that it can be beautiful".

The plastic bags are transformed into a versatile material that is colourful, soft, lightweight and durable offering many design possibilities. Initially the plastic is layered and bonded with heat to make it malleable, and then cut, folded and hand stitched.

Lesley completed a two year placement at Ulster Museum on Craft NI's making it 09 programme for craft business development.
