Nuala McHugh

Nuala McHugh is a textile artist and designer committed to creating distinctive textiles. Rhythm, pattern, colour and composition are the elements which continually present themselves in Nuala’s work.

She started ‘ikat’ during her time at NCAD. Nuala uses the skill of ‘ikat’ to make contemporary distinctive wall-hangings; she endeavours to develop new, intriguing and unconventional ways of challenging craft.

“I split my time between design for industry and one-off art pieces. It comes quite naturally to me to continually develop my designs. I like to move freely between art, design and craft. I want to make beautiful things for people to wear and to have in their home.”

Nuala demonstrates how her handmade ‘ikat’ designs can be adapted to suit different uses. Designs were executed by digitally printing silk twill to produce high-end fashion scarves. Other designs were simulated for jacquard weaving in order to produce fabric for interiors.
