Flex + Ply Exhibition

Exhibitions6th November, 2010

Flex + Ply is a collaborative between artists and medical educators at the University of Ulster and Durham University. Using textiles, body painting and projection, the exhibition explores the scientific and symbolic meanings of the body.

Funded by the Wellcome Trust, the exhibition convey the wondrous, frequently beautiful and often disturbing world of biomedicine. It is the outcome of a collaboartive project that aims to challenge culturally constructed views of the body interior.

Through the creation of textile structures and forms, the project exposes the narrative implications of movement, change and degeneration within the body. It also investigates the potential use of such structures within anatomy teaching and as communication aids between practitioners and patients.

The products of ‘Flex and Ply’ are now used as teaching aids for anatomy students and often challenge the existing scientific ‘truths’ of our bodies.

In an article comissioned by Craft NI, Joseph McBrinn explores the work of Professor Karen Fleming which looks specifically at one of the exhibition pieces - an 'incisions' garment. The article is available to download from the Resources section of our website.
