Fragments

Exhibitions1st September, 2011

‘Fragments: deconstruction & conservation' features exciting new work by two emerging textile artists Jenny Haslett and Michelle Stephens. The exhibition runs at Craft NI's gallery from 1 September until 27 October.

Weave has traditional roots in industrial and heritage settings. Haslett and Stephens challenge the traditional perception of weaving by making tangible the possibilities of weave in contemporary craft. Jenny’s selection of materials is innovative, relying on concepts of archaeological retrieval, whereas Michelle’s materials are a direct response to her environment and the aesthetics of the work.

"This series of work consists of three mixed media wall pieces and a site specific installation." explains Michelle.

"In response to the process of weave, laser-cut fragments merge with personal, abstracted weave techniques, enabling me to establish my own voice through the way in which I assemble the individual fragments. With this in mind, it is the tactile qualities and fine details of the work that are vital to the communication aspect of my practice.

Jenny Hasslett describes her work as "small sculptures consist of found wooden and metal components onto which woven pieces of cloth are spun and exposed.

"I tread between creation and conservation by reinterpreting the thread in ways that are completely reversible. The continuous chain of crochet, and the uncut warp and weft of weave allow the thread to remain intact. Old delicate threads are harmlessly altered to be given a new meaning in a contemporary context."

The exhibition runs at Craft NI's gallery from 1 September until 27 October. A preview as part of Late Night Art takes place on Thursday, 1 September from 7-9pm.
