Anna Dumitriu: Normal Flora, the inaugural exhibition at R-Space @ The Linen Rooms Lisburn, opens on Saturday 30 July at 1pm and runs until 17 September. This major new solo show by international artist Anna Dumitriu blurs the boundaries between art, textile crafts and science.
Normal Flora, the name given to the microbes with which we co-exist in our daily lives, combines microbiology, installation, craft, digital technology and performance to provide a fascinating insight into Dumitriu’s long-term collaborative practice in art and science.
Her work has a strong international profile and is held in several major public collections, including the Science Museum in London and she is Leverhulme Artist inResidence on the Modernising Medical Microbiology Project at The University of Oxford.
The 6-week exhibition at R-Space is part of August Craft Month 2011 and is supported by Lisburn City Council, will feature a range of digital, biological and traditional media including live bacteria, projections and textiles including pigments from environmental bacteria, antibiotic embroidery and a series of works examining the emerging field of ‘bacterial communication’.
All the works are made in collaboration with scientific experts and sterilised prior to exhibition.
