Crafts Council (UK) Making Futures conference: Call for papers

The second Crafts Council (UK) Making Futures conference aims to improve understanding of the ways in which contemporary crafts are practiced in relation to global environmental and sustainability issues.
The Making Futures conference invites submissions from practitioners, curators, theoreticians, historians, campaigners, activists, and representatives of public and private agencies with an interest in the relationship between the contemporary crafts, social engagement and sustainability issues.
This second conference builds upon the success of the first event which attracted a global audience and generated extremely positive feedback from across the arts and crafts sector. As with the first conference, the aim is to improve understanding of the ways in which contemporary crafts are practiced in relation to global environmental and sustainability issues.
However, in addition to continuing to pursue a range of thematic dialogues established through the first conference, the 2011 event will lead with the exploration of two new themes that emerged as concerns through the 2009 conference: 'Craft as social process' and 'Craft in an expanded field'.
In investigating these themes, the conference will draw together an international cast of academics, practitioners, curators, campaigners, activists, and associated organisations, bringing these groups into close and productive dialogue.
To ensure the widest possible dissemination of the conference outcomes, all papers will be published as Volume 2 of the online journal Making Futures. Plymouth College of Art will maintain this as a long-term open-access research resource.
