Developing Gallery Exhibitions

Seminars7th June 2011 - 16th June 2011

The next seminar of Craft NI’s Business Support Programme takes place on 15 June at Flowerfield Arts Centre with designer, maker and curator Karen Richmond.

Karen Richmond has worked as a designer, maker and curator since graduating from the RCA in 2000. Her diverse practice has led her to undertake public participation projects with Tate Modern, the Craft Council and work on commissions for the Southbank.

Working collaboratively with museums and galleries, industry and communities is an important part of Richmond’s practice. This has led to her working with master craftsmen from Beijng, pewter manufacturers in Sheffield and recently 60 couples in love from around the UK. Current collaborations are with Flour, Wentworths, Galvanize Festival, V&A and Maiko Tsutsumi from t.n.a design.

Since 2006 Karen Richmond has been the Course Director of the BA 3D Design at Camberwell College of Art, a designing and making course within the UAL-University of the Arts London.
In 1996 Karen graduated from Kingston University with a BA Hons in Sculpture and in 2000 received an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art.

Current Projects: Richmond and Maiko Tsutsumi have co-curated an exhibition & symposium entitled ‘Thingness’ selecting works from Michael Marriott, Neil Brownsword, David Clarke, Gareth Neal and Jasper Morrison. The exhibitions puts into question, what affords a thing, thingness. http://thingnessofthings.wordpress.com/

The seminar will give tailored advice on how to identify appropriate galleries and exhibition opportunities. Participants will gain an understanding of the gallery buyer, craft collector and their expectations and learn how to present their practice to a gallery audience.
