Opportunities
From Experience Workshop

From Experience WORKSHOP event – three days with public lectures and presentations, podium discussions and networking opportunities from 3-5 March 2011. Application is now closed.
The workshop is for makers and originators who talk ‘From Experience’ when it comes to concerns over function, meaning and aesthetics as well as, importantly, making a living. It is set up to engage and empower those who see the need to improve and review their decision-making and way of managing their art and/or design-work and business.
Therefore, equally welcome as workshop participants are commissioners, retailers, manager and gallery owners, collectors of contemporary objects and those whose experience and contribution to the debate about owning, placing and promoting the work of contemporary makers will be pivotal, which may also include writers, publishers and individuals engaged in education and policy making.
- 09.30 – 17.00, Thursday 3 March - Workshop begins (selected participants only)
- 09.30 – 17.00, Friday 4 March - Symposium with lectures, presentations, podium discussions, social networking opportunities (public and workshop participants). More information →
- 10.00 – 17.00, Saturday 5 March Workshop continues (selected participants only)
Theme and Discussions
What impulses drive the creation of work, or the collection of it? As a maker, do you know what makes your work desirable? As a gallerist, retailer or collector how can you understand better what motivates someone to purchase, promote or collect work and what are they buying into?
Through necessity, most makers seek to be successful across a range of markets – working for commissions, showing in specialised galleries, interiors and design shops and participating in trade fairs - but what is known about the motivation and expectations of potential audiences?
From Experience will explore these issues, and others, by looking at the gap between real experiences and assumed ones.
Workshop Facilitators
The workshop is led by practitioner Christoph Zellweger, Visiting Professor in Applied Art at the University of Ulster since 2009 and initiator of the lecture series ART & DESIGN & MOVEMENTS in BETWEEN at the university. Other key contributions for this event will come from professional colleagues Dr Jorunn Veiteberg (expert on crafts) and Mònica Gaspar Mallol (independent critic on applied arts) who will give public presentations and reflect on the topics and support workshops with selected makers.
