New Technology in Textiles Research

{alt}

In recent years, technology and its applications, has been the focus of many international discussions on craft practice. Now, one of Northern Ireland’s most influential textile artists, Professor Karen Fleming, is pioneering a project that applies her knowledge of textiles to medical science.

The project - to design a garment for medical student training - is a collaborative venture between Fleming, Director of the Art and Design Research Institute at University of Ulster and Professor John McLachlan, Associate Dean in Durham University’s School for Health.

The garment is the start of a wider project funded by Wellcome Trust that explores teaching, learning and thinking about the body through a series of art works and artefacts.
