Volunteer Profile: Sarah Boyd
Learn more about Sarah Boyd’s experience of volunteering with Craft NI during August Craft Month. Sarah graduated in 2010 with a Masters in Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage.
My interest in the arts sector has stemmed from studying History of Art as part of my English Degree at Queen’s University. When I graduated, I went on to do a Masters in Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage with the University of Ulster, and graduated in December 2010.
I currently volunteer for a number of organisations including the National Trust, Ormeau Baths Gallery and Craft NI.
I began volunteering with Craft NI in March 2011 and help out as often as I can. During August Craft Month there were plenty of opportunities to get involved and I volunteered at four different events where I got to meet some interesting and inspirational people at the events.
One of the most enjoyable events was ‘The Sounds of Making’ workshop held at the University of Ulster with Felicity Ford. People were invited to bring along the tools of their craft and join Felicity in a drop-in session to record and discuss the sounds made. I found this event particularly interesting as it was great chatting to Felicity as she was so passionate about her work. The workshop revealed an aspect of craft that I had not considered before and it was great to be able to assist Felicity with the recordings.
My advice to anyone looking to volunteer would be to just go for it! Everyone at Craft NI has been extremely helpful and friendly. Not only does it look good on your CV, but it is a genuinely fun way to spend your free time.
