SUMMARY:Willow Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Using willow that has been sustainably grown on site at the Navan Centre\, learn the ancient skills of willow weaving with Heather McDermott\, or Fraoch the weaver as you may have known her\, from the Celtic clan at Navan Centre & Fort. The Saille or Willow has been used for thousands of years as a multi-purpose\, sustainable material.\n\nWith themed monthly sessions taking place from May to October\, choose the month or months that have the most interest to you – £50.00 per session. Each workshop lasts for a half day and includes lunch.\n\n28th May – Learning knots and ties with willow & creating a 2D sculpture.\n25th June – Learn basic weaving and tying techniques to make your own obelisk for peas or climbers (This can also be used as a festive Winter light feature).\n23rd July – Preparing a shallow ribbed basket and getting started\, to be finished off at home.\n27th August – Learn how to make a slath for baskets or use as a sunwheel for Lughnasadh.\n24th September – Working with living willow you will make a decorative fence panel to take home and plant.\n22nd October – Coppicing\, sizing and storing your willow. Planting new rods. Students will receive a starter kit for their own Saille Garden.\n\nStudents will also learn about the history\, myth and lore of willow as the weeks progress. Written information and advice will also be provided for students to keep. Please be aware this is a fairly physically demanding course and requires reasonable manual dexterity and strength. Some of the work will take place outdoors in variable weather.

SUMMARY:Porcelain Slipcasting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join local ceramicists Rebecca Killen and Laureanne Kootstra for a masterclass exploring the creative process of slip casting. \nDuring this workshop you will have the opportunity to work with porcelain casting slip\, a selection of plaster moulds and coloured porcelain. You will also learn about refining your cast pieces and how to apply surface decoration. \nThe tutors will fire three of your cast porcelain pieces ready to be collected from The Ash Gallery in 2-3 weeks. \nPlease note: tea\, coffee and lunch from our neighbours at Birch all included in cost of workshop; same applies for all materials and firings.

SUMMARY:From Flame to Fuse
DESCRIPTION:From Flame to Fuse is a glass making workshop that is a crossover between flameworking and fusing providing a solution for what to do with the offcuts and scraps generated in the glass studio from previous sheet glass projects. \nA two day workshop with Andrea Spencer exploring flameworking techniques to create elements at the torch that can be used in fused glass projects. Using The class will cover melting down sheet glass into rods which will then be manipulated at the torch to make inclusions for fusing. This workshop will use Bullseye glass. \nCome and learn flameworking and glass making techniques with Andrea Spencer in the intimate setting of her studio on the Wild North Antrim Coast. \n@benefield_spencer_glass

SUMMARY:Light in the Trees Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Festival of Women’s Writing\, three local designers and makers have been invited to exhibit their hand made works inspired by nature on 25th June at Mary’s Farm\, a music venue in the Dromara Hills. \n  \nThe visual showcase\, called Earth\, Sea and Sky\, will feature pieces of ceramicist Annita McKee\, silversmith Lou Gillett and textile artist Rachel Fitzpatrick\, all of who’s work has been inspired by nature. \n  \nAnnita McKee utilises the sea’s impartiality as a way to find freedom and explore her ideas to articulate psychological scenarios and navigate memories.  The sea is part of her artistic process and is where she often photographs her porcelain sculptures either on the shoreline or underwater. Lou Gillett background in architecture as well as the environment in which she lives in is a key influence on her jewellery designs. From clean sharp lines through to organic forms she is influenced by both the man-made built environment through to rural landscapes and work can vary from mirror finish to highly texturised pieces.  Her work is often concept driven. Rachel Fitzpatrick uses industrial textiles and materials creating sculptures inspired by the rhythms of the land and sky to create pieces which are at the interface of art and design. \n  \nThe Earth\, Sea and Sky showcase will run alongside the Festival of Women’s Writing event hosted by Maggie Doyle\, author of ‘Mountain Notes\, A Nature Diary’ and writers will discuss their work inspired by the natural world and local landscapes.  The event will include readings by poet and teacher Anne McMaster\, ‘Walking off the Land’\,  and author\, journalist and teacher Rosie Schapp who is currently writing about the coastal village of Glenarm\, together with an open mic session for writers who would like to share their writing inspired by the natural world. \n  \nIf you’d like to attend this event or book an open-mic slot to read your work\, please email magysfarm@gmail.com.
