SUMMARY:Adornment (Re-use and Re-imagine)
DESCRIPTION:The ACJSNI Re-Use + Re-Imagine Adornment Project is a collaborative venture between artist / makers related to the linen heritage of R-Space Gallery. The project highlights the distinct characteristics of 3-Dimensional research in Silversmith\, Jewellery and Textile Art practices. The three craft areas see frequent overlaps in scale\, materials\, and methods of construction which\, when combined\, create potential for dynamic statements that push beyond traditional boundaries. \nThe artists present work that has explored a cross-over of sensitivities towards the human experience of making\, and developed their specialisms creating unexpected synergies and directions\, in materials and narratives. The diversity of approaches has been documented throughout the project spanning June and July. The visuals\, videos and recordings of processes will form part of the Exhibition supporting the finished pieces and providing contexts that enrich understanding. \nArtist talks will take place in the gallery on 20th August and 3rd September. \nACJSNI will be running a Lace-making workshop with National & International award winning lace designer and maker Theresa Kelly in the gallery on 27th August. \nTitle: Carrickmacross Lace Workshop – 3D Carrickmacross Lace Flax Flower. \n  \nPlease note: the exhibition is open Tuesday – Saturday.

SUMMARY:'Wool Works' Meet the Maker Event: Felt demonstration with Mandy Nash
DESCRIPTION:Associated with the ‘Wool Works’ exhibition (now open at Craft NI Gallery until August 5th)\, this unique Meet the Maker event with textile designer maker Mandy Nash is great for getting (re)acquainted with felting. \nMaP member and Wool Works exhibitor\, Mandy Nash will be in the gallery demonstrating how to use felt Irish Cushendale wool. She will happily answer any questions on either her work or the Wool Works exhibition. \nMandy Nash is a professional textile and jewellery designer maker. She set up her studio in 1983\, directly after leaving the Royal College of Art. She works primarily in colourful\, non-precious materials\, usually anodised aluminium\, producing one off and batch production jewellery\, creating large\, bold pieces which are both wearable and affordable. \nOver the last twenty years she has also been creating felt work\, combining this with her jewellery practice\, creating both functional and non-functional work. Feltmaking\, although an ancient craft\, is growing into a popular\, exciting contemporary medium\, expanding in many new directions. Wool is a wonderful\, natural and sustainable material and Mandy is enthralled by the meditative\, feltmaking process. During this last year\, she has been experimenting with different wools\, exploring their individual characteristics to create tactile\, three-dimensional work. \nShe is a member of the Makers Guild in Wales\, the Association of Contemporary Jewellery and MaP\, a textile group\, and is a regional co-ordinator and chair of the International Feltmakers Association. She has exhibited widely in the UK\, Europe\, Japan\, USA and Canada. \nwww.mandynash.co.uk \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peter Meanley: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Craft NI are delighted to organize this talk as part of their upcoming exhibition ‘Peter Meanley: New Works’. This solo show will feature new works by renowned salt glaze potter Peter Meanley\, which he has developed over the last three years. \nPeter Meanley has won international acclaim for his abstract spouted pouring vessels and his mastery of the salt glazing technique. Formerly Head of Ceramics at the University of Ulster in Belfast\, Peter has been awarded a PhD for researching salt glazing in 1999 – a process which involves throwing salt into a kiln\, whilst it is fired at high temperature\, resulting in a characteristic ‘orange-peel’ pitted surface. \nThis unique exhibition is supported by three talks which will give the audience a unique opportunity to hear Peter Meanley talk about his work and share insight into his practice\, processes and inspiration: ‘Exhibition opening night and Peter Meanley talk’ (Craft NI Gallery\, 5 May at 6pm)\, ‘Peter Meanley: Reflections’ (Ulster Museum\, 26 May at 12 noon) and ‘Technical talk: Salt Glazing with Peter Meanley’ (Craft NI Gallery\, 21 May at 12 noon). \nThroughout this talk\, Peter will reflect on 50 years as a maker and why he turned to salt glazing. Peter will bring in sketch books and things dear to him to explain what has triggered the various changes to his style technique and philosophy\, as he will unveil lots of items in wood\, metal\, paper and of course fired clay to exemplify. This talk will appeal to collectors and curators in particular\, but also to a wider craft audience who takes an interest in ceramics and salt glazing. \nFor more of Peter’s unique work\, the exhibition ‘Peter Meanley: New Works’ is on at Craft NI Gallery from 5 May to 11 June. \nVenue:  Ulster Museum\, Lecture Theatre \n  \n

This talk will appeal to ceramics students\, craft collectors as well as practicing ceramicists who may want to learn about this technique and how to use it to get the beautiful results it can deliver. Peter is one of the very few ceramicists on the island of Ireland who specialize in salt glazing\, with almost 40 years of experience and knowledge. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition opening night and Peter Meanley talk
DESCRIPTION:Craft NI are delighted to invite you to the opening night of their upcoming exhibition\, ‘Peter Meanley: New Works’.  As Craft NI Gallery takes part in Late Night Art and stays open until 8pm\, the highlight of the opening night will be the opportunity to meet renowned salt glaze potter Peter Meanley in person and hear him talk about puzzle jugs and other more considered works. \nA technically complex piece\, the puzzle jug has a perforated collar\, making it impossible to pour from\, unless the drinker knows there is a hole\, or number of holes which they must cover with their fingers\, to allow the liquid to flow without spilling.  The puzzle jugs were Peter’s lockdown project which he found inspiration for in the early medieval puzzle jugs which served not so much as a drinking tool but as a drinking game (a well-known example of this puzzle jugs is the Exeter Jug\, which dates back to 1300 AD). A keen collector of historic ceramics and other beautiful objects\, Peter waited almost 50 years for this idea to materialize: a broken jug he acquired in 1969 was the exact piece that inspired him to start this project in 2019. \nThe audience will have the opportunity to test their skills at finding out which way the puzzle jugs work. This event is sponsored by Boundary Brewery\, who have kindly provided locally-brewed craft beer for the occasion. \nPlease note: Peter’s talk will start at 6pm.

SUMMARY:'Curved with Intent' - Meet the Makers!
DESCRIPTION:Craft NI are delighted to invite you to the opening night of  ‘Curved with Intent’\, their upcoming exhibition of contemporary design in wood. \nCraft NI Gallery will take part in Late Night Art Thursday\, February 3rd between 5pm – 8pm. Join us and meet the designer-makers exhibiting in ‘Curved with Intent’ – a great opportunity to ask them about their inspiration\, processes or enquire about future commissions! \n‘Curved with intent’ is Craft NI’s first event of a varied 2022 exhibition programme and promises to raise interest in the beautiful medium of wood and admiration for the talented Northern Irish designer-makers who work with it. \nWood as a construction material and man have had a very long relationship – not surprising since it is so extraordinarily versatile. The ability to create curved forms in wood is an example of its extreme adaptability to different needs and types of objects and construction\, and it perfectly illustrates the theme of the exhibition – gentle and purposeful mastery that transforms a simple organic material into beautiful and/or functional craft objects. \nWood can be shaped in many ways\, and the work displayed in the exhibition will demonstrate both a variety of objects and methods\, including carving\, turning\, laminating\, steam bending and cutting from solid. \nThe participating designer-makers are David Cousley\, Mark Hanvey\, Ronan Lowery\, Brian McKee and John Piekaar. \nEach participating designer-maker speaks through their work to the audience of their own particular relationship with the material: the shapes they produce are more or less practically and/or aesthetically purposed. They are very deliberately envisaged – they are curved with intent.
