SUMMARY:Willow Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Using willow that has been sustainably grown on site at the Navan Centre\, learn the ancient skills of willow weaving with Heather McDermott\, or Fraoch the weaver as you may have known her\, from the Celtic clan at Navan Centre & Fort. The Saille or Willow has been used for thousands of years as a multi-purpose\, sustainable material.\n\nWith themed monthly sessions taking place from May to October\, choose the month or months that have the most interest to you – £50.00 per session. Each workshop lasts for a half day and includes lunch.\n\n28th May – Learning knots and ties with willow & creating a 2D sculpture.\n25th June – Learn basic weaving and tying techniques to make your own obelisk for peas or climbers (This can also be used as a festive Winter light feature).\n23rd July – Preparing a shallow ribbed basket and getting started\, to be finished off at home.\n27th August – Learn how to make a slath for baskets or use as a sunwheel for Lughnasadh.\n24th September – Working with living willow you will make a decorative fence panel to take home and plant.\n22nd October – Coppicing\, sizing and storing your willow. Planting new rods. Students will receive a starter kit for their own Saille Garden.\n\nStudents will also learn about the history\, myth and lore of willow as the weeks progress. Written information and advice will also be provided for students to keep. Please be aware this is a fairly physically demanding course and requires reasonable manual dexterity and strength. Some of the work will take place outdoors in variable weather.

SUMMARY:'Wool Works' Workshop: Crafting shirts with prof. Jane McCann\, Sirpa Mörsky and Elspeth Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Associated with the ‘Wool Works’ exhibition (now open at Craft NI Gallery until August 5th) and also part of the Creative Peninsula programme\, this full day workshop will focus on crafting shirts. The event will be lead by maker/practitioner Jane McCann with visiting practitioners Sirpa Mörsky (Finland) & Elspeth Thomas (Wales). \nParticipants will learn to produce garment shapes from a basic shirt block for on-going development that may be: \n\nEnduring style as opposed to transient fast fashion\nAdaptable to different end uses from casual workwear to the exotic\nAgeless and inclusive: Sized to the style preference of the wearer\nOffering potential for embellishment and personalisation \nSuitable for domestic machine sewing – or potentially hand sewn.\n\nPattern style adaption:  \nIntroduction to practical pattern block adaptation for a range of styles: \nFor example\, adaptation can: Elongate / Crop / Gather / Flare etc. \nTypical adaptations may include: Workwear Jacket/ Smock/ Shirt Dress. \nGuidance on fabric selection and potential for embellishment and personalisation \nBrief reference to methods of  joining of seams \nEquipment: \nPlease bring: 2 / 3 metres calico  \nPlease select light\, medium or heavy weight calico dependent on style preference to be developed. (NB: Medium weight calico will be available for participants to buy if necessary) \n\nSet square – if available and/or  Ruler – if available\nPattern Tracing Wheel – would be helpful!\nTape measure\nPencils (Soft and Hard) and Pencil sharpener \nRubber\nPaper scissors and Fabric scissors\nPins\, Needles\, and thread\n\nParticipants: (Maximum 8) (Not suitable for under 16) \nThose with a love of timeless clothing\, with an interest in textiles and simple shirts/ workwear and some basic experience in sewing / making.  \nPlease note:  the price of the workshop does not include calico – this will be extra if buying from host.
