SUMMARY:'Wool Works' event: Textile Talk and Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique event associated with the ‘Wool Works exhibition currently on at Craft NI Gallery until August 5th. \nThe Textile talk and brunch will feature two very special guests: Chris Weiniger\, general manager of Donegal Yarns woollen mill who will talk about Ireland’s rich wool heritage\, and  Finnish textile artist and weaver Niina Hiltunen who will talk about the importance of craft within communities and also do a weaving demonstration for the audience using a portable loom. \nNiina Hiltunen is a textile and fiber artist working and living in Pirkanmaa region\, Finland. She holds a master’s degree in Art and Culture with weaving her specialty. She studied textile art at the University of Lapland 2020-2021 and starts there as a doctoral candidate in the autumn of 2022. Hiltunen is also interested in multidisciplinary art and in community art\, which has led her having an exhibition at a psychiatric centre in Tampere in 2019\, as well as leading art projects with the YMCA youth in 2019 and with dementia patients in 2021. Kädet kertovat (Talking hands)\, a multidisciplinary artwork combining textile / fiber art with contemporary dance\, video and sound art\, is her latest collaboration. \nThe programme of the day will be as follows: \n– 10:30 – 11 talk with Chris Weiniger\, general manager at Donegal Yarns woollen mill \n– 11 – 11:30 coffee/brunch break \n– 11:30 – 12:15 talk with Niina: Art & Well-being – Feel the weave and WeaveCreatively™: an introduction to a Finnish approach of textile art in community art practices. In her talk\, Niina clarifies the administrative means and actions of The Finnish Governments in implementing art as a continuous part of life and cure\, well-being in Finland. The second half of her talk will concentrate on her personal work as a textile artist and the workshops and community art practices she has led in the past years. \n– 12:15 – 13:15 demo with Nina: Feel the weave – WeaveCreatively™ . Some examples and ideas of how to use weaving and portable looms as a means of community art. Material sponsored by The Donegal Yarns. DESCRIPTION:Associated with the ‘Wool Works’ exhibition (now open at Craft NI Gallery until August 5th)\, this workshop will be lead by Jane McCann together with visiting practitioner Sirpa Mörsky from Finland. \nThe focus of this workshop will be on shirts – to produce garment shapes from a basic shirt block for on-going development that may be: \n\nEnduring style as opposed to transient fast fashion\nAdaptable to different end uses from casual workwear to the exotic\nAgeless and inclusive: Sized to the style preference of the wearer\nOffering potential for embellishment and personalisation \nSuitable for domestic machine sewing – or potentially hand sewn.\n\nPattern style adaption:  \nIntroduction to practical pattern block adaptation for a range of styles: \nFor example\, adaptation can: Elongate / Crop / Gather / Flare etc. \nTypical adaptations may include: Workwear Jacket/ Smock/ Shirt Dress. \nGuidance on fabric selection and potential for embellishment and personalisation \nBrief reference to methods of  joining of seams \nEquipment: \nPlease bring: 2 / 3 metres calico  \nPlease select light\, medium or heavy weight calico dependent on style preference to be developed. SUMMARY:'Wool Works' Meet the Maker Event: Felt demonstration with Mandy Nash
DESCRIPTION:Associated with the ‘Wool Works’ exhibition (now open at Craft NI Gallery until August 5th)\, this unique Meet the Maker event with textile designer maker Mandy Nash is great for getting (re)acquainted with felting.  \nMaP member and Wool Works exhibitor\, Mandy Nash will be in the gallery demonstrating how to use felt Irish Cushendale wool. She will happily answer any questions on either her work or the Wool Works exhibition. \nMandy Nash is a professional textile and jewellery designer maker. She set up her studio in 1983\, directly after leaving the Royal College of Art. She works primarily in colourful\, non-precious materials\, usually anodised aluminium\, producing one off and batch production jewellery\, creating large\, bold pieces which are both wearable and affordable. \nOver the last twenty years she has also been creating felt work\, combining this with her jewellery practice\, creating both functional and non-functional work. Feltmaking\, although an ancient craft\, is growing into a popular\, exciting contemporary medium\, expanding in many new directions. Wool is a wonderful\, natural and sustainable material and Mandy is enthralled by the meditative\, feltmaking process. During this last year\, she has been experimenting with different wools\, exploring their individual characteristics to create tactile\, three-dimensional work. \nShe is a member of the Makers Guild in Wales\, the Association of Contemporary Jewellery and MaP\, a textile group\, and is a regional co-ordinator and chair of the International Feltmakers Association. There will be flexibility in the teaching allowing students to request specific demonstrations or help with a particular technique. \nFinished pieces will be glaze fired in the gas kiln and ready 3-4 weeks after the course for collection. DESCRIPTION:CRAFT NI are delighted to welcome you to their upcoming event – ‘Wool Works’\, an exhibition of contemporary textile design. \nCo. Down textile expert professor Jane McCann is behind this innovative exhibition bringing together Welsh\, Finnish and Northern Irish textile artists\, who have been working together since 2001.  \nThe artists found they shared so many values: high quality craft\, ethics\, sustainability and ecology.  Following a successful research trip to Finland in 2018\, the idea for a joint exhibition was born. The newly established connections helped develop new ideas and friendships\, compare working methods and cultures and ultimately create the new exciting work seen here. \nTraditional made Modern \nThe theme of the exhibition is wool and the way traditional motifs and techniques can be reinterpreted in a contemporary setting\, embracing links between the cultural heritages of Wales\, Ireland and Finland. The exhibits include unique hand-woven tapestries\, woollen blankets\, framed textile art\, one-of-a-kind accessories and garments such as Irish style workwear jackets or house coats (with some of these unique pieces available for sale)\, and highlight techniques such as felting\, free stitching\, digital embroidery\, knitting\, hand weaving and plant dying.  \nParticipating makers have used sustainable materials such as Cambrian and Finnish wool\, indigo dyed Merino wool\, Irish bainin tweed and Donegal yarns in the works. Professor McCann is passionate about the potential of wool and an advocate of its increasing use in the textile industry. She believes that this unique material deserves to be celebrated and highlighted alongside linen and other sustainable textiles. \nThe exhibition will be supported by valuable workshops and demos led by the exhibiting artists which encourage participation from the public. SUMMARY:Light in the Trees Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Festival of Women’s Writing\, three local designers and makers have been invited to exhibit their hand made works inspired by nature on 25th June at Mary’s Farm\, a music venue in the Dromara Hills. \n  \nThe visual showcase\, called Earth\, Sea and Sky\, will feature pieces of ceramicist Annita McKee\, silversmith Lou Gillett and textile artist Rachel Fitzpatrick\, all of who’s work has been inspired by nature. \n  \nAnnita McKee utilises the sea’s impartiality as a way to find freedom and explore her ideas to articulate psychological scenarios and navigate memories.  The sea is part of her artistic process and is where she often photographs her porcelain sculptures either on the shoreline or underwater. Lou Gillett background in architecture as well as the environment in which she lives in is a key influence on her jewellery designs. From clean sharp lines through to organic forms she is influenced by both the man-made built environment through to rural landscapes and work can vary from mirror finish to highly texturised pieces.  Her work is often concept driven. Rachel Fitzpatrick uses industrial textiles and materials creating sculptures inspired by the rhythms of the land and sky to create pieces which are at the interface of art and design. \n  \nThe Earth\, Sea and Sky showcase will run alongside the Festival of Women’s Writing event hosted by Maggie Doyle\, author of ‘Mountain Notes\, A Nature Diary’ and writers will discuss their work inspired by the natural world and local landscapes.  The event will include readings by poet and teacher Anne McMaster\, ‘Walking off the Land’\,  and author\, journalist and teacher Rosie Schapp who is currently writing about the coastal village of Glenarm\, together with an open mic session for writers who would like to share their writing inspired by the natural world. \n  \nIf you’d like to attend this event or book an open-mic slot to read your work\, please email magysfarm@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:From Flame to Fuse
DESCRIPTION:From Flame to Fuse is a glass making workshop that is a crossover between flameworking and fusing providing a solution for what to do with the offcuts and scraps generated in the glass studio from previous sheet glass projects. \nA two day workshop with Andrea Spencer exploring flameworking techniques to create elements at the torch that can be used in fused glass projects. Using The class will cover melting down sheet glass into rods which will then be manipulated at the torch to make inclusions for fusing. DESCRIPTION:Join a guided tour of Encirc Bottle Manufacturing Facility! \n\n\n\n\n\nIn the glass industry we think of glass in 3 areas. Best for health\, taste and environment. Whilst the first 2 ‘bests’ are without contention\, glass being an inert product doesn’t release anything into the product or react to anything from the product\, thus preserving the taste of the product and the health aspect of the consumer\, the environment section is a challenge. Although 100% recyclable\, glass does have to focus on emissions from the fuels we use in furnaces\, the emissions from raw materials and the transportation challenges of moving a product heavier than all its rival packaging products. Vidrala Group are tackling these projects head on and with the recent acceptance of the SBTi 1.5o are making a public statement of intent on the environment. \nFiacre O’Donnell\,  Sustainability Director at Encirc Bottle Manufacturing\, Northern Ireland will accompany this tour providing invaluable information about the glass industry. \n

SUMMARY:Bending Glass & Sustaining the Art of Neon
DESCRIPTION:Event Information \nThis launch event and panel discussion marks and celebrates the public online release of ‘Bending Glass’ – a Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film Archive Project’ which tells the story of master glass bender and neon sign maker Adrian McNevison of AM Light taking archive footage from the UTV as a starting point. \nThis multi-faceted project illuminated the former UTV studios at Havelock House\, Belfast with artworks made from light and archive footage from the UTV vaults in a special installation for 3 days in February 2022. To coincide with its online publication on the NI Screen’s Digital Film Archive this event will provide further context on how the project unfolded (and its potential next stages) and we will also hear from a panel of speakers connected with the art of neon. \nSpeaker Information \nKevin Killen \nKevin Killen current practice is the creation of self made neon light sculptures and installations\, often site-specific. The works capture moments in time\, representing life and peoples’ physical journeys as snapshots of lives. Based in Belfast\, he obtained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design University College (now the UCA) in 1999 and specialist training in neon making in Dallas\, Texas in 2009. Large-scale Light installations have been created for the Market Place Theatre and Art Centre Murmur 2021 and National Trust’s Argory\, Armagh\, in May 2018. https://www.kevinkillen.com/ \nClaire Magill \nNational Trust\, is a charity and membership organisation for heritage conservation in England\, Wales and Northern Ireland. Claire Magill is a Regional Conservator for the National Trust NI and has worked on numerous restoration and conservation projects across the region The National Trust looks after one of the world’s largest and most significant holdings of fine art and heritage objects. \nhttps://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ \n\nChirs McNevinson\, Director and Neon Apprentice\, AM Light \nAM Light have been creating exquisite bespoke lighting for over 50 years. Chis is the son of Adrian McNevinson who formed AM Light in 1973 having started an apprenticeship with Neon Signs (Ulster) in 1958. Chris had a career in mechanical engineering before becoming an apprentice in the family business in 2003. \nhttps://am-light.com/ \nAbout \nBending Glass was instigated and organised by artist Johanna Leech in response to the Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive UTV residency programme. The exhibition was in partnership with Flax Art Studios with support from the Department for Communities. The UTV Archive in this exhibition is courtesy of the partnership project (ITV\, Northern Ireland Screen and PRONI). Presented alongside the screenings and stills were contemporary neon artworks produced by AM Light for Michael Hanna\, Stuart Calvin and Johanna Leech\, self-made neons by Kevin Killen\, lightboxes by Susan Hughes\, a written guide by Paula Blair\, and a video interview with McNevison and his son Chris.

SUMMARY:Introduction to glass fusing
DESCRIPTION:In this one day workshop you will learn how to cut glass\, about the many different types of glass and about the effects of heat on glass\, all under the guidance of your tutor Alison Lowry. In the morning you will create a range of tiles exploring some glass fusing techniques\, such as inclusions\, ceramic decals\, powder effects. In the afternoon you will start to work on a larger piece\, which will be fired and then slumped (shaped) in the kiln to make a freestanding sculpture or bowl\, this will be ready for you to pick up at a later date. A great course for those who have limited time that just want to make something beautiful for their house and have fun. \nPlease note: maximum 4 people per workshop.

SUMMARY:Willow Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Using willow that has been sustainably grown on site at the Navan Centre\, learn the ancient skills of willow weaving with Heather McDermott\, or Fraoch the weaver as you may have known her\, from the Celtic clan at Navan Centre & Fort. The Saille or Willow has been used for thousands of years as a multi-purpose\, sustainable material.\n\nWith themed monthly sessions taking place from May to October\, choose the month or months that have the most interest to you – £50.00 per session. Each workshop lasts for a half day and includes lunch.\n\n28th May – Learning knots and ties with willow & creating a 2D sculpture.\n25th June – Learn basic weaving and tying techniques to make your own obelisk for peas or climbers (This can also be used as a festive Winter light feature).\n23rd July – Preparing a shallow ribbed basket and getting started\, to be finished off at home.\n27th August – Learn how to make a slath for baskets or use as a sunwheel for Lughnasadh.\n24th September – Working with living willow you will make a decorative fence panel to take home and plant.\n22nd October – Coppicing\, sizing and storing your willow. Planting new rods. Students will receive a starter kit for their own Saille Garden.\n\nStudents will also learn about the history\, myth and lore of willow as the weeks progress. Written information and advice will also be provided for students to keep. Please be aware this is a fairly physically demanding course and requires reasonable manual dexterity and strength. Some of the work will take place outdoors in variable weather.

SUMMARY:Peter Meanley: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Craft NI are delighted to organize this talk as part of their upcoming exhibition ‘Peter Meanley: New Works’. This solo show will feature new works by renowned salt glaze potter Peter Meanley\, which he has developed over the last three years.  \nPeter Meanley has won international acclaim for his abstract spouted pouring vessels and his mastery of the salt glazing technique. Formerly Head of Ceramics at the University of Ulster in Belfast\, Peter has been awarded a PhD for researching salt glazing in 1999 – a process which involves throwing salt into a kiln\, whilst it is fired at high temperature\, resulting in a characteristic ‘orange-peel’ pitted surface.  \nThis unique exhibition is supported by three talks which will give the audience a unique opportunity to hear Peter Meanley talk about his work and share insight into his practice\, processes and inspiration: ‘Exhibition opening night and Peter Meanley talk’ (Craft NI Gallery\, 5 May at 6pm)\, ‘Peter Meanley: Reflections’ (Ulster Museum\, 26 May at 12 noon) and ‘Technical talk: Salt Glazing with Peter Meanley’ (Craft NI Gallery\, 21 May at 12 noon). \nThroughout this talk\, Peter will reflect on 50 years as a maker and why he turned to salt glazing. Peter will bring in sketch books and things dear to him to explain what has triggered the various changes to his style technique and philosophy\, as he will unveil lots of items in wood\, metal\, paper and of course fired clay to exemplify. Formerly Head of Ceramics at the University of Ulster in Belfast\, Peter has been awarded a PhD for researching salt glazing in 1999 – a process which involves throwing salt into a kiln\, whilst it is fired at high temperature\, resulting in a characteristic ‘orange-peel’ pitted surface.  \nThis unique exhibition is supported by three talks which will give the audience a unique opportunity to hear Peter Meanley talk about his work and share insight into his practice\, processes and inspiration: ‘Exhibition opening night and Peter Meanley talk’ (Craft NI Gallery\, 5 May at 6pm)\, ‘Peter Meanley: Reflections’ (Ulster Museum\, 26 May at 12 noon) and ‘Technical talk: Salt Glazing with Peter Meanley’ (Craft NI Gallery\, 28 May at 12pm). \nIn this talk\, Peter Meanley will share his technical knowledge of salt glazing with his customary generosity. This talk will appeal to ceramics students\, craft collectors as well as practicing ceramicists who may want to learn about this technique and how to use it to get the beautiful results it can deliver. Peter is one of the very few ceramicists on the island of Ireland who specialize in salt glazing\, with almost 40 years of experience and knowledge.  \n

DESCRIPTION:During this workshop\, specifically designed for complete beginners\, you will make two colourful sun-catchers using a wide variety of colourful glass and design possibilities. Glass artist Keith Sheppard will teach you various design techniques to get you started\, demonstrate the tools required for glass cutting\, and show you how to work safely and handle glass with confidence. \nYour completed fused glass decorations will be taken back to Keith’s studio for firing and returned to the venue one to two weeks later for collection. \nPlease note: All tools and materials will be provided. You may wish to bring your own safety glasses.
