Processions Banner to be exhibited at the British Textile Biennial

23 July 2020

Part of the PROCESSIONS, a UK- wide mass participation artwork to mark 100 years of women’s suffrage, produced by Artichoke and commissioned by 14-18 NOW, based on an idea by Darrell Vydelingum.

The Institute for Conflict Research, working alongside the artist Rita Duffy, involved over 30 women participants from various locations across Northern Ireland (including from six villages of the Peninsula in Ards and North Down Borough Council, Armagh and Belfast) in the design and creation of a banner for the Belfast march. Participants were also taken on heritage and arts-related site visits, which facilitated experiential learning on suffragettes, suffragists, democratic principles and art in the public space.

The banner created will be among 16 Processions banners selected for the British Textile Biennial, which will take place in the historic Brierfield Mill from the 4th October – 3rd November this year.

The British Textile Biennial will look at fabric and textiles as a vehicle for expression, protest and cultural identity through installations, performances and artworks. The PROCESSIONS banners will form part of the Belief Belonging Broadcast, a mass presentation displaying messages of protest from heritage collections and campaigning groups across the UK.
