Natural Dye Workshop
About the event
Join artist Lyndsey McDougall at the Folk Museum for this interactive workshop, introducing you to the world of natural dyes and the tools and skills required to prepare and dye linen.
Natural materials have been used to dye textiles in Ireland for centuries. A range of colours could be derived from diverse organic sources such as lichens, plants, flowers, berries, vegetables and roots, amongst others. Linen has been cultivated in Ireland since the 11th Century, and would often have been dyed using these natural materials.
During this workshop, Lyndsey will guide you around the Folk Museum as you forage for plants to make dyes from. Learn how to prepare your linen and create a dye bath. You will get to take home two small pieces of naturally dyed linen and a few dye bath recipes!
