NI Scrubs and NI Big Community Sew Exhibition
About the event
Come along to Millennium Court to experience The Story of COVID Stitchers! exhibition from Thursday 10th-Thursday 31st August.
During covid a group of over 9,000 stitchers, volunteers and supporters joined forces to create over 106,000 items for the front line and over 70,000 face coverings for the vulnerable.
It was a mammoth effort of pulling together thousands of people to sew scrubs, scrub hats and gowns for hospitals, hospices, care homes and other caring professionals.
The brainchild of Clara Maybin at the start of the first lockdown, when nursing and care staff were facing shortages, it grew from an appeal to become an army of 9,000 sewers, including Great British Sewing Bee contestant, Angeline Murphy.
In addition, a total of £75,000 was raised to purchase the material to make the items.
It was a great campaign that helped more than just the front-line staff. It helped thousands of stitchers rediscover their skills, meet new friends and give back to society.
This exhibition of patchwork quilts tells a story of the Covid Days and what it meant for the sewing volunteers. Each patch represents a stitcher or a volunteer and was lovingly pieced together to create these stunning wall hangings.
This exhibition reflects positivity on a time that was filled with so much uncertainty and anxiety for the community.
