Textiles, Mixed Media
Fiber artist Pennie Metcalfe specialises in the use of wool fiber to create textiles and three-dimensional forms.
Pennie Metcalfe is a fiber and textile artist. She attended Bradford College, where she studied fashion and ceramics; thereafter, she completed a Fine Arts Degree at Derby University in 1997.
With over two decades of experience in art education, Pennie worked as a ceramics tutor at Harrogate College, focusing on special education. She then completed a postgraduate qualification in Art Therapy and moved into psychiatry. She is a strong advocate for the importance of craft skills, art, and the creative process in education, cultural understanding, and mental well-being.
In 2021, Pennie returned to her own art practice and began working professionally in 2022/23. She specialises in using wool and other natural fibers to create textiles and fiber sculptures through ancient techniques such as wet felting, shibori, and weaving. Her work is inspired by themes associated with the natural environment of ancient moorlands and coasts, with a particular interest in symbiotic relationships.
Through her artwork, she aims to create a seamless unity between her subject matter, environmental influences, and the core materials used. Pennie has exhibited her work in Northern Ireland and across England. She is a member of Fibre Art Now, the Embroiderers’ Guild London, and the International Felt Association.
