Your Brexit Questions

28 January 2021

Craft NI is working to clarify the steps makers will need to take to meet Brexit requirements.

What we know:
• NI has unfettered access to GB so most goods moving to GB from NI will not require declarations.
• NI remains in the EU single market for goods so there will be no regulatory checks in trade NI to ROI.

If you have not already done so, you should also get an EORI number. You will need both a GB EORI number and an XI EORI number. If you do not already have a GB EORI number, you can apply for both a GB EORI number and an XI number at the same time. There is no risk to having an EORI number if you do not use it.

We are working to secure an information session for makers to clarify the situation as soon as we can but in the first instance Craft NI is engaging with a number of agencies and advisors on some key questions.

We already know you want clarification on points such as:

  • Sending and/or taking work to trade shows and/or exhibitions in GB, and in particular the process of returning unsold work to NI from GB
  • What declarations (if any)are required when buying materials from GB where the resulting work may eventually be sold in NI and/or GB and/or EU
  • When customs and VAT charges are due; and who is responsible for payments. Applies to purchases and sales.
  • How to help suppliers in GB understand what’s required when supplying goods to NI
  • How to help galleries and/or exhibition organisers in GB understand what’s required when sending/returning work to NI
  • How to ensure NI artists and makers aren’t disadvantaged in selection procedures because of these new admin requirements
  • Do these rules apply to services (eg teaching) or only to goods
We invite you to email any further questions to so we can develop a comprehensive Craft-focused FAQ.
