Elements of Place – Formed by Fire is a 5 day flamework, filati (hand pulled glass threads) and micro-mosaic workshop aimed specifically at practicing glass and mosaic artists. The workshop is designed to expand creative practices through exploration of these complementary hot and cold glass working techniques, in combination with simple casting, use of found natural and manmade forms, and field trips to study the dramatic natural landscape of the local Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland, from which we’ll draw inspiration for our work during the week.
Andrea Spencer (glass) and Joanna Kessel (mosaic) are highly regarded artists within their specialist fields, frequently exhibiting their contemporary artworks nationally and internationally. The natural environment informs both their current work.
This unique combined workshop developed out of a research period Joanna undertook at Andrea’s studio, supported by the Inches Carr Creative Development Award. Both artists found the research potential fascinating, recognising the exciting dialogue between the materials, processes and artforms.
